Published: July 15, 2025A resume objective is different from a resume profile summary. The most notable feature of an objective is that it provides context for your professional goals. While this might seem to make sense for someone looking to transition to a new field, on the whole you’re better off focusing on demonstrating that you can address the company’s needs. Highlighting transferable skills is much more impactful than stating your goal. The purpose of the resume is to show the hiring manager you’re qualified for the job, and personal objectives can detract from that.
While we wouldn’t recommend leading with a resume objective in most situations, it can work for high school and college graduates looking for assistant or internship positions. Let’s explore this in the three examples below:
Resume Objective #1
A community outreach volunteer within the nonprofit sector, specializing in volunteer mobilization, partnership development, and advocacy campaign strategy. Seeking an opportunity to support activism efforts to aid the homeless housing crisis in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
Why this Resume Objective is Strong:
Notice how this objective outlines the young candidate’s goals in a way that is actually relevant to the organization they’re applying to. In this case, the objective is mission-driven, emphasizing the applicant’s commitment to advocacy for a specific cause. This adds value to the resume because it shows that the candidate is a volunteer looking for a more permanent position and is invested in the nonprofit’s outreach efforts.
Resume Objective #2
Public health outreach specialist coordinating care access programs, community health workshops, and patient education initiatives. Seeking to support underserved populations by expanding health equity efforts through targeted outreach and partnership development.
Why this Resume Objective is Strong:
Similarly to the last example, this objective is effective because the statement isn’t centered around the young candidate’s aspirations to advance their career, but rather their commitment to expanding health equity and improving quality of life for underserved communities.
Resume Objective #3
Former junior U.S. Army operations officer leading cross-functional teams, managing logistics for multi-million-dollar missions, and developing crisis response plans. Seeking to bring mission-driven leadership support, accountability, and some planning experience to a corporate operations support role.
Why this Resume Objective is Strong:
The last sentence of the resume objective is impactful. The candidate isn’t merely talking about offering support to a private sector role; they’re emphasizing the mission-driven support capabilities they cultivated through military service.

When applying for any job, your top priority is demonstrating why your background, experience, and accomplishments make you a qualified candidate. Hiring managers have limited bandwidth to comprehensively assess each resume they receive, which is why your opening summary is so critical. This is your first opportunity to make a positive impression on the reader. A resume summary provides impactful and engaging insights into your career; whereas a resume objective more explains how you hope to grow within your industry and serve them.
The key to writing an engaging resume summary is to tailor it towards the job posting. Think carefully about how your skills and expertise make you an ideal fit for the organization’s needs. For example, if a company is looking for an operations manager with a background in facility management, you might emphasize your background in developing preventative maintenance schedules that lowered repair costs and eliminated the risk of downtime.
Unless you are a new high school or college graduate, you shouldn’t feature an objective at the top of your resume. Companies want to know about how you will help them as opposed to your hopes and dreams.
If you’re going to include an objective in your resume, use AI to provide an initial draft of your resume objective or summary, but make sure that you edit the content yourself. The hiring team can tell when you have written the content versus AI.
New high school and college graduates should be the only ones who use a resume objective. This age group is still young and expected to learn on the job, so an objective is sometimes more appropriate for that age group.
